Day 98-The Oregon Sweat-fest, Plastic Attire Only

Day 98: mile 1792-1808.9

I had some interesting dreams starring all kinds of people; family, friends, people I’ve met on trail, even a Harry Potter character or two. 😂 I definitely could’ve slept later, but gotta get a move on.

I looked out and could see the mosquitoes were still lurking. Usually they’re not as bad in the morning, not here, it’s a 24/7 operation. I thought about peeing in one of my empty food bags, but braved the outside. Mistake. Bites galore and about 15 mosquitoes followed me inside. I didn’t even bother trying to get them out, just went about my morning completely covered in my own tent. Oh how I miss flies… They land in poop, but at least they don’t bite. 😂

I set off in my mosquito gear and immediately started sweating. I felt like a high school wrestler trying to make weight all covered up in this hot humid weather. I thought the day was going to be miserable, but thankfully it had a few nice little surprises in store for me.

So comfy in my plastic! Sweatfest!

The first was running into Tropicana and Farmers Market! Thanks to all my days of slacking on my miles they caught up. It was so fun seeing them!

Next up, the mosquitoes started to lessen and I didn’t have to be covered up any longer, yes! Finally, the views I got today were the most unexpected surprise. I thought it would be all tree cover again, but instead I was walking on the side of the mountain or on the ridgeline for miles. As you should know by now, that’s my style.

I hit a bit of patchy snow as I headed down the mountain. Not even enough to really slow me down. In fact it was kind of fun to be in a little snow again.

The second half of the day felt a little long. My mind again needed a distraction from thinking about how many miles I had left and how my feet were starting to hurt. I found a few podcasts I hadn’t listened to yet, just the trick! I was able to knock out 7 miles without even noticing.

I made a quick stop on the side of the trail to begin my cold soak before the last 2 miles into camp. From what I read this was the only site in the area that wasn’t surrounded by dead, burnt trees waiting to fall over and kill me in my sleep. Sweet, sounds like home for the night. I set up and was joined by my new friend Descartes who had given me the marshmallows the other night. We’re both headed into Crater Lake tomorrow. I’m pretty excited to see it’s beauty! Off to bed for more crazy dreams I hope! 😂

Mosquito-free enough to leave my tent unzipped! Heaven!

Goodnight!

XOXO Becks
