Day 97: mile 1773.5-1792
I didn’t get a good nights sleep, my feet and hips were bothering me last night. I’m sure it was the super hard ground walking through the boulder field. I was off to a grumpy start, tired and frustrated. I was hoping to get out of camp early, but instead didn’t leave until 10:20 due to attempting some extra sleep this morning. My plan for 25 miles was out the window at this point.
More frustrating was the mosquitoes that swarmed me as I went to the bathroom. The swarms only got worse throughout the day. I didn’t even come to a complete stop before they were surrounding me. Anyone who has experienced this knows how horrible it is. Oh, and it sprinkled all day. Apparently mosquitoes can even fly in the rain, they are pure evil.
I was also surrounded by trees the whole day, only popping out a couple of times briefly. The start of the day was mostly dead trees and branches, but it began to get a bit greener toward the end of the day at least.
I made it to my tent site, which was about 5 more miles than my body wanted to do today, and 7 miles short of where I planned. Sort of a compromise I guess. I read a note in my app saying the mosquitoes weren’t bad here, not the case. Hundreds swarmed while I put my tent up in my bug net, wind jacket, pants, and even adding my rain kilt because they’ve been biting through the top part of my pants where the material is tight on my legs. They’re vicious! I quickly jumped inside and ended up with mud in my tent from my shoes. I attempted to get it out pretty unsuccessfully. I’d rather have mud than mosquitoes. I think I’d also rather pee my pants than go back out there tonight.
I’d love to put a positive spin on today, but it was a rough one. Laying in my tent right now I see they’ve formed a colony. I survived the snow, but I don’t know if I’ll survive mosquito season. I have no doubt I’ll hear that horrible buzzing in my nightmares. I hope I don’t wake up one giant mosquito bite.
Goodnight!
