Day 54: mile 1197.9-1209.3
Dipity headed out before me with the plan to wait for me if things were too sketchy. This motivated me to get up and moving earlier than usual. Off into the foggy morning I went.
As I made my way to the snow I could see the peaks of the mountain I had just come down days before. Only today they were barely visible, covered in clouds. A different, but beautiful perspective.
I passed mile 1200, which means nothing now that I’ve flipped up. 😂I also passed a deer grazing for breakfast. The morning started out so pleasant, cold and wet, but still pleasant. I even thought the sketchy part I’d read about was over. I was so wrong.
As I was making my way up a particularly narrow part of the trail, my foot slipped, and the rest of me followed. I went sliding down the steep mountainside unable to stop. I slammed into a boulder, bringing me to an abrupt stop. So thankful it was there, I’m not sure how far I would’ve gone otherwise. My pack took the brunt of the impact, so I wasn’t injured. I sat there for a second to absorb what just happened and figure out how to get back up. Only about 10 feet from the trail, I slowly and calmly made my way up. I had to repeat my steps, only this time I made it across. Phew! I gave myself a once-over to make sure my adrenaline didn’t make me miss an injury. Nope, thankfully I was all good. Okay, now the sketchy part is over right?
I had another mile or so where I had to traverse the side of the mountain before I reached the top and was walking on “flat” ground. Still climbing, just not on the side of a mountain any longer.
I followed the tracks from the boys and Dipity to the top of my 1500 foot climb. Happy that was done, I headed down and around a lake, then to a super nice campground. So tempted to stay, as the day had already been exhausting, but it was too early. I used the pit toilet at least!
Just after the campground I reached a creek crossing. With no snow bridge in sight I knew I’d have to take my snowshoes off and get my feet wet. I tossed the first one over gently so I didn’t have to carry them across, no problem. The second one was not as successful. In my attempt to toss it gently, I also tossed it short …right into the creek. Nooooo! It started floating down stream quickly, I had no choice but to go in after it. I grabbed it just in time, but I was also now waist deep in the cold water and it was late in the day. Oops.
Thankfully the trail decided I’d had enough today and gave me a break. Minutes after getting soaked the sun came out and I ran into the boys. Yessss!! I was so happy to see them!
We hiked a few more miles to camp, where they did a fabulous job stomping the most giant campsite. After only hiking together one full day, it was clear they were two peas in a pod, or more accurately two cheese balls …in a bag? 😂 They got along famously.
I got into my tent and under my warm quilt, ready for bed but worried about Dipity. She wasn’t feeling well when the boys saw her. Hopefully by the time I leave tomorrow she’ll catch up.
Well, I’d say that was enough adventure for one day. Glad I’m still in one piece, I’m off to sleep.
Goodnight!
XOXO Becks
So glad to hear you’re okay! 😊✌️
Yikes! What a day! Glad it all ended well though!
