Day 44: mile 587.3-603.4
It had been raining all morning. I’m not sure what time it started, but around 1:30 am a loud crack of thunder woke me up. The lightening was flashing across the sky, but didn’t seem to be anywhere near me. I put my buff back over my eyes and went back to sleep until about 6.
I started my morning as usual, breakfast in bed, until my body decided it needed to go to the bathroom. Not normally a big deal, but in the rain everything is more difficult, especially digging a hole and squatting over it while trying to stay dry. I can definitely say I’ve never gone to the bathroom while holding an umbrella before. Think about that when you use your fancy shmancy toilet today! 🤣
With that out of the way I went on about my morning, finishing breakfast and strategically folding my tent so the inside might be half dry later when I put it up. I was off into the rain by 9, shooting to make it 19 miles.
The rain stopped and I was feeling great, cruising through my hike and loving this cloudy weather. It was like a whole new trail. A different kind of beautiful.
I got to my first bit of uphill 7-8 miles in and it was tough. I’m not sure if it was the cold weather, the wind, not enough calories for the day (likely all 3), but my energy shifted and I was exhausted. Around mile 10 I decided to give myself a break and dry my soggy feet out too. This was a great, except once my body cooled down all my sweat made me freeze after sitting for a few minutes. Time to keep moving.
I made it 5 more miles to the water stop I’d planned and decided I wasn’t going to make the full 19 miles. There was a campsite less than 2 miles away I was now shooting for. The uphills continued to be tough, with my legs feeling weak when I stopped, and I was also a bit light headed. My body was telling me this was far enough, and I listened.
I put up my tent and left the doors open to dry it out a bit before I crawled in for the night. With no service, I used my Garmin to check the weather for tomorrow, hoping the rain might clear. No such luck. It looks like the afternoon into the night forecasted heavy rain. Dang. The morning looks clear …ish, so I’m going to attempt an early start. Fingers crossed by some weather miracle the rain clears, and more importantly my body gets the rest it needs!
Goodnight!
