Day 40-LA Aqueduct; Flat Doesn’t Equal Easy

Day 40: mile 417.6-546.6

Who needs sleep anyway? I checked my phone and it read 1:44 am, close enough to the alarm I’d set. I started packing up for our 3 am departure feeling less than motivated. I peaked out to see if SOS was up, no light in his windows, so I laid back down to get a little more sleep. No luck, so I woke him up around 3. He forgot to save his alarm, oops. 😂 We were off by 4, headed out into the darkness.

We quickly reached the Aqueduct and were greeted by roosters and barking dogs. The people that live in the area must love when their dogs barks nonstop at all hours while the PCT-ers pass by. 😳

The sunrise was beautiful and we had a perfect view. The whole sky lit up with pastels, the colors reflected off the clouds behind us.

The Aqueduct went from visible above ground to buried underneath. So began our very long flat walk. You’d think that would be welcomed, but it’s a killer on the balls of your feet when the ground is that hard. At least SOS and I could distract ourselves with conversation.

We reached the faucet about 17 miles in, our first stop for the day. We filled up, rested for a bit and continued on into the wind farm. Shocker, it was real windy.

This section was pretty brutal. Wind coming toward me and a lot of uphill. Phew! I had to give myself a few pep talks during this section. One of which included telling myself I had a burrito, a celebratory beer, and a nap coming my way at our next stop, definitely motivating.

I made it! I sat and ate my food, drank my beer, but got no nap. It was super cold and windy, so we knew we had to push on. Already at 23 miles and not enough sleep I wasn’t sure how much further I’d go. We added a few more hikers to our crew and took off.

The rest of the day was basically uphill, but having the boys there was motivating. We hiked up and up and up, then allllll the way back down, only to hike up and up and up all over again. It was exhausting, but future me was already happy I did it. I stopped at 29 miles for the day and set up at a beautiful spot. What a day! Tomorrow is a town day, so at least I get to feast after all that work.

Goodnight!

XOXO Becks
