Day 29: mile 369.3-374 on trail, mile 374-386.1 on Highway 2
I woke up to fresh hot coffee and the smell of cookies. I’m convinced this house always smells delightful! Although it has been very relaxing and I have been spoiled in Wrightwood I am ready to head back to the trail. How quickly I miss it.
I washed the sheets, made the bed, showered, and slowly gathered my things. Although I was missing the trail, I was in no rush to get started on this particular hike today.
Today I walk about 5 trail miles, and 10 road miles. I knew the road walk would be rather boring, but better than the alternative. I decided to go around Mt Baden Powell for now. It is still really snow covered and promised to be a very difficult and draining day, much like the days outside of Idyllwild. I’ll come back when the snow is gone to complete the climb safely, and with much less frustration. Enjoying the trail is my top priority, rather than completing it in a specific sequence.
Back to Inspiration Point! I started on the trail and quickly got to the visitors center in the area, noticing multiple school buses parked out front. I remember thinking what an awesome field trip! Shortly after, I began to see small groups of the kids being guided down the trail. Two groups asked me to stop and talk about my experience on the PCT, this made my day! What a special moment. ☺️ Getting everyone to look at the camera was quite the challenge as you can see. 😂
I only had a few miles left on the trail, but I met another friend just before my road walk began. This one was a real surprise! Being at 6500 feet, I did not expect a rattlesnake, but there it was on the side of the trail waiting for me. It definitely startled me as I was adjusting my poles, not looking at the trail. Luckily it had no interest in me and didn’t even bother rattling, just moved into the bushes.
Okay, here we are folks, the road walk portion of the day. It was downright thrilling! 😂
It did at least have great views, and a surprising amount of water available along the way. I listened to a funny podcast to pass some time and stopped for plenty of breaks. Unfortunately I did not see anyone other than a cyclist who waved as he zoomed by.
I was so happy to see a few tents at the trailhead parking lot, and even happier when I knew the hikers they belonged to. We sat at the picnic tables chatting as we watched the sunset. Having some company after a solo road walk was nice. It got cold and dark quickly, so we all headed for our tents. I’m happy this road walk is over and I’ll be back to the trail tomorrow! …well for most of the day anyway.
Goodnight!
