Day 178- Benson Pass, Following the Rules

Day 178: mile 948.4-968.5

I woke up to a short line at the solar composting pit toilets. This is the last place I expected to wait in line for the bathroom (how cool is a solar composting pit toilet by the way!). There was a group camping at the upper portion of Glen Aulin, I thought I heard some rowdy guys last night. They were on a company retreat, how fun! I have to say I was jealous and a little bitter that none of them had a bear canister, actually they had no idea what one was. Sometimes following the rules is frustrating!

My bear can and I marched off into the morning feeling so happy to be back on the trail. It’s so amazing what a couple days and warmer temps will do.

I ran into a group who said they’d seen a ranger asking for permits and plans. They complained about getting a hard time, but I have to say I was excited to be stopped since I had my bear can and changed my permit back in Independence. I wanted to be rewarded for doing the right thing (feel free to chuckle, I know it sounds silly), but somehow I missed him. I think instead, at this point my goal is to get through the entire 2650 miles without having to show my permit. With only about 200 to go, chances are high.

As I made a creek crossing I noticed a lady boldly dunking her head in the freezing cold water. We waved hello and walked toward each other to chat. She too had run into the ranger of course, but the reason I bring this up is because she ended up living down the street from me, wild! What are the chances of running into your neighbor out here.

I made it up and over Benson Pass still feeling so good. …a little chilly, but good. I managed to make it to the top just in time for the sun to be right in my face. I enjoyed the view and the warmth from the sun for a few minutes before heading down since it would be dark soon enough.

The downhill portion was quick and easy and before I knew it I made it to camp at Smedberg Lake. The sun was setting and it was perfection. Oh, and I finally made it 20 miles again today, yes!

Goodnight!
