Day 160: mile 730.8-749.5
The night was noticeably colder than it has been. So much so, I’m considering having my Mom send me another layer to sleep in. It’s only going to be getting colder from here since it’s now mid September. At least the cold night carried into the morning, maybe today won’t be as hot as it has been.
I walked over to the creek and dipped my hands in to fill my bottle, the water was quite brisk as well! Once I hit a little bit of sunshine I warmed up and the day felt perfect, or maybe it was the first 4 miles of the day were pretty straight up.
I was right, the landscape was changing and I loved it! The views are big and open and there is a mix of pines and junipers (my favorite!) growing sporadically amongst the granite boulders. I was in heaven. How could it get more beautiful than this?
I hit a spot of service and called my parents to tell them just how amazing the Sierra is starting out. I told them I’d decided I was going to take my time and really enjoy this last section. My hike was almost over and I wasn’t ready for that yet, plus who would want to rush through this wondrous place anyway?
The rest of the day the climb was pretty gradual and the views continued. In the distance I could see the huge granite walls that had been carved out by water and glaciers, I was in awe. I’d never seen anything quite like it in person. I also caught glimpse of some very vocal cows in the distance. Good thing camp was still a few miles away.
I made it to my campsite for the night, another big open space with lots of flat ground to choose from. The spot I chose was a bit windy, but it looked like it would get some morning sun, and that takes priority in my book.
I had such an amazing day. As I sat there with a big smile on my face I realized my feet hadn’t been hurting out here at all. Apparently my body agrees with the Sierra.
Goodnight!
