Day 159: mile 709.8-730.8
I was off to a good start this morning. I hit the trail a bit earlier than usual and I was going at a good pace as I again approached the Kern River. I made my way across the wonderful bridge and enjoyed the view it provided.
Now it was time to make my way up. I expected the climb to be a bit more gradual, but the higher I climbed the steeper it got. Oh and the heat was also working against me again today, but at least I had water all the way up! I definitely had to take a few breathers. I found this rock that might as well have been a chaise lounge it was so comfortable.
The rock/lounge
As I approached the top I hit my highest point on the trail yet at just over 10,500 feet. This is the elevation I’ll be living at from here on out, well between 10,000-13,000 feet. I can’t wait to see the views! They’re already spectacular.
I headed downhill, which was a nice break after all that climbing, even if it was switchbacks. I stopped at the creek just before where I’d planned on camping for the night and it was looking less than desirable. Hardly any water running, and what was running was pretty full of algae. I wasn’t desperate, so I pushed on to Death Canyon Creek, which was another 2.5 miles and even managed to make it before dark. The creek was flowing with delicious water and the site was awesome, so much flat space. I set up and hopped inside as the temps dropped quickly once the sun began to go down. I’m pretty excited for tomorrow, I can already see the landscape changing!
Goodnight!
