Day 151: 2607.1-2626.7
My day started in the trees and bushes, and with a little extra company I didn’t ask for. I was off doing my morning business and left my pack on the ground at the side of the trail, apparently that caused a group walking by to be concerned for my whereabouts. Not exactly the time you want people giving the area a careful survey. Luckily I was not seen until I wanted to be. We all got a laugh as I appeared out of the bushes and explained why they had no reason for concern. They were quite embarrassed.
After my nice easy warm up the first few miles, I began my 3,000 foot climb. Normally switchbacks aren’t the most welcomed sight, but I got excited when I saw these. I could tell the view was going to be so amazing I wouldn’t mind walking back and forth for miles, and it was. Not to say I wasn’t happy when the switchbacks were over and I could enjoy the view from the top in a seated position.
I sat at there for a bit taking in the view with a small crowd of people who were out for a day hike coming from the other direction. I might’ve been a bit jealous of the delicious-looking food they’d packed for themselves. I hope I didn’t stare too much… Good thing the view was very distracting!
I made my way off the windy summit and continued on where I spent miles on the side of the mountain taking it all in. Apparently WA is going to spoil me with it’s views all the way to the end, and I’m happy to let it.
The trail brought me to Harts Pass, a notable spot in this section. It is both where southbounders start their journey, and where northbounders have to come back to if they don’t have a passport to cross into Canada. Lucky for me, I do, no backtracking required!
I trekked on another few miles, almost stopping at a few campsites, but I’m glad I didn’t. I found the most perfect spot tucked away all to myself. Yes, that’s right, no crowded campsite tonight! I knew this would be my last night alone in Washington, tomorrow I’ll be really close to the border, there’s no way I won’t be sharing a site. I got to enjoy every bit of it’s beauty as I watched the sun set, with only the sounds of the wind and birds surrounding me. It was such a gift! I said my thank you’s and goodbyes to WA. It has been such a special and unforgettable place.
Goodnight!
