Day 149- Next Stop, Canada!

Day 149: 2572.4-2583.6 (Six Mile Camp)

The night wasn’t quite as restful as I’d hoped, even with the beer and wine as a sleeping aid. Around midnight it started raining and every was rushing around trying to get their tents up or flys on as fast as possible. It was probably the hottest night on trail, so everyone was attempting to stay as cool as possible by sleeping in the open, unfortunately that backfired. My tent is all one piece, so I didn’t have to worry about that, but it was close quarters, so I had numerous headlamps shining on me like spotlights and could hear stakes being pounded into the ground. Oh sleep, how I miss you…

I sat down by the water and finished my postcards. It was so wonderfully relaxing, I wished I could’ve stayed. If you get the chance, make your way to Stehekin, you won’t regret it. Definitely one of my favorite trail towns yet!

I got my resupply box organized so I could catch the earlier bus and have an hour at the bakery to gorge myself on a sandwich, salads, and baked goods! Good thing I was early, my sandwich took so long I almost missed the next bus. What else can you expect when a bus full of hungry hikers comes in and each of us orders enough for three people? I packed out my remaining food in ziplocks and headed back to the trail.

My new friend Pineapples and I were the last two at the trailhead, neither of us ready to make the 3,000 foot climb in this hot afternoon heat (it was a toasty 90 degrees). Everyone I met in town all had permits for the same campsite, so at least we had that to look forward to. She took off and I followed shortly after. I needed an extra minute to take in the fact that I was about to start my last stretch before Canada. The days have been so tough lately I was pretty pumped for a big accomplishment to push me to finish the Sierra. I think reaching the northern terminus should do the trick!

My ‘holy crap this is the last stretch to Canada’ face!

I was happy to have a permit that forced me to go the 11 miles to a specific camp, because I know I would’ve stopped short otherwise. Just as I turned off the main trail to the side trail into camp, I ate it pretty hard. Fell right on my butt. I looked back at what had caused me to fall, no clue, just some regular dirt. I burst out in some much needed laughter and made my way down into camp where Pineapples and a few others were already set up and hangin by the fire. Shortly after the rest of the gang, Green Bean, Lizard, and Stuck Foot all joined. I said hello to everyone and headed back to my tent to eat the remainder of the bakery food I’d packed out. Already regretting getting the Thai salad, I can tell this bag is going to smell even more in another day or two. This is the first time I’ve experienced this situation, hope I find a trash before the border. I also hope the guy next to me stops moving around in his giant tent (it’s big enough to stand up in) so I can get some sleep tonight.

Goodnight!
