Day 148- Stehekin IS All It’s Cracked Up To Be

Day 148: mile 2557.5-2572.4 (Stehekin)

I slept pretty terribly, per usual these days. At least I only have 15 miles and it’s mostly downhill. I packed up and was on the trail by 7:30. The newly installed pit toilet helped keep me on track, no time spent digging a hole today!

The trail started out a bit rocky and rough on my feet, and of course was surrounded by my least favorite vegetation (not pictured, but whenever it’s around it’s always humid and buggy). I was so grumpy. I felt like a toddler who didn’t take a nap, ready to lose it over tripping over a rock or something equally as silly. Tired me is not a pleasant me. In all seriousness, I am at a pretty high level of frustration that I haven’t felt rested in way too long. It makes hiking 5,000 feet up and down in a day much more difficult, and less enjoyable. I have plans to find some natural sleep aids when I get back home help me get through the Sierra.

The miles felt like they were creeping by, but I was making decent time. The bus I planned to catch left at 3 and I’d be there just after 1. I was looking forward to just sitting on my butt waiting for it.

I made it to the trailhead, as did a handful of other hikers. We sat around chatting about our experiences. It was a nice way to pass the time.

The bus arrived and we headed out to Stehekin. On the way we stopped at the famous bakery I’d heard so much about. It was glorious! I got myself a couple of salads, some spring rolls, and a muffin. It was all heavenly. I’ll be back for more tomorrow!

We pulled into the one street town, only accessible by foot, boat, or I suppose a small plane that can land on the water. Stehekin sits on the shore of Lake Chelan, which spans 60 miles. This place is as calming as it is beautiful. I think I could stare out at the water and up at the Cascades indefinitely. Unfortunately I had chores to do.

I charged batteries, washed the necessities in the sink since the line for the washer was a bit long, and got the necessary permits for tonight and tomorrow night. With that done, I made dinner plans with a few other hikers I’d been hanging out with since we all got in. We shared dinner and some wine before making the long haul up the hill to set up our tents just as the sun was going down. Todays relaxation was much needed. I don’t think I’m ready to leave tomorrow, but unfortunately I can’t afford a zero with my flight already booked. Oh well, I’ll be back Stehekin!

Goodnight!
