Day 115: mile 2097.4-2099.2
Well today was a nero if I ever saw one! With good reason at least, I didn’t get a wink of sleep. The wind was gusting nonstop all the way into the morning when I finally gave up on sleeping and went down to the lodge for breakfast.
The buffet at Timberline is famous among hikers, and I can see why. Tons of good food, but unfortunately there wasn’t much I could eat. Instead of the whole shebang, I ordered a side of potatoes. I assumed they’d come from the kitchen, but they let me serve myself off the buffet line. Score! Three plates of potatoes later, I was feeling oh so full, but also extremely nauseous again. I was hoping it was just my stomach not agreeing with what I ate (2 lbs of potatoes!), but my fear is I may have a stomach virus since they are pretty common out here.
After breakfast I relaxed in the lodge, unsure of when I was leaving and how far I wanted to hike in my semi-delirious, nauseous state. I would’ve stayed put, but I’m not risking another sleepless night in the wind.
I finally got moving late afternoon. Not feeling any better, I set out to make it as far as my body would let me. …I made it 1.8 miles. It was only 4:30, and I could have made it further, but I felt like I really needed to give my body a break, and not to push myself in this state.
I set up my tent in a sweet little spot that wouldn’t have any chance of getting windy. I relaxed for hours, eventually going from nauseous to starving. I laid in my tent, nervously eating the leftover curry I packed out (I know, probably not the wisest food choice with a sensitive stomach, but it was far too good to waste). My stomach seems to be okay for now, so I’m heading to sleep before that has a chance to change.
Goodnight!
